Well, there is an African proverb that says: “If you know the beginning well, the end will not trouble you”. The history of Artificial intelligence (AI) dates back to the 1950s, although the ideology of intelligent machines dates back even further. In this article, we’ll explore the genesis and early developments of AI, and how it has evolved into the field we now know today.
The term “Artificial Intelligence” was first coined by John McCarthy who organized the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence in 1956 to discuss the prospects of creating thinking machines that could behave like humans. This conference is often regarded as the genesis of the AI field.
The Perceptron, which was the first self-learning machine was created in the late 1950s by Frank Rosenblatt. It was one of the first major achievements in Artificial Intelligence. It was a type of neural network that could learn to identify and recall patterns in data, laying the foundation for the development of more complex machine learning algorithms in the future.
AI research in the 70’s and 80’s was mostly influenced by the growth of expert systems, which were designed to mimic a human being’s decision-making abilities in a specific field. Although these systems were able to make decisions using a set of rules and a database of information, they were unable to learn and adapt effectively.
In the 1990s, the AI domain underwent a resurgence, thanks to advancements in computer hardware and the development of more powerful machine learning algorithms which led to the creation of more advanced expert systems, as well as the development of natural language processing and autonomous robots.
Today, AI is used in various applications, including image and speech recognition, language translation, and decision-making in self-driving vehicles. This is a rapidly growing field, with new advancements and applications being explored all the time. Besides, the ethical concerns often raised, AI is an aspect of Information Technology that has enormous benefits. Be creative with the use of AI, and use it to positively to create value.
Overall, the history of AI is a captivating one, with countless developments and achievements that have resulted in where we are today. Can anyone predict what to expect in this area of Information Technology?
